WILL CALHOUN AGREES TO ENDORSEMENT WITH MAPEX
NASHVILLE, TN — Mapex USA announced today
the signing of drummer Will Calhoun, a highly respected and versatile
studio player and original member of the ground-breaking band,
Living Colour. Calhoun will exclusively be playing a Mapex Orion
Series drum set during his numerous studio gigs and live engagements.
“ I’m happy to be a part of the Mapex
team. The drums deliver the tone and response I’ve always
looked for,” said Calhoun upon signing with the company. “Mapex
was able to give me exactly the configuration I needed and I’m
very excited about my relationship with them.”
Joe Hibbs, Artist Relations Manager for Mapex explained
the importance of signing a talent like Calhoun to the roster. “Will
is an outstanding player with remarkable creativity. Whether
it be jazz, funk or rock, he adds his distinctive signature to
everything he does. I’ve known Will for nearly twenty years
and have been inspired by his work ethic and remarkable talent.
He’s just the type of versatile player and principled person
we’re looking for.”
Originally from the Bronx, New York, Calhoun is
a graduate of the Berklee School of Music in Boston and a recipient
of the prestigious Buddy Rich Jazz Masters Award for outstanding
performance by a drummer. A four-time winner of Modern Drummer’s
Reader’s Polls and the 1990 winner of the Drummer of the
Year by Rolling Stone Critics Poll, Calhoun is best known for
being a founding member and catalyst of the best-selling and
critically acclaimed band, Living Colour. As a member of the
band, Calhoun was awarded two Grammy Awards and an International
Rock Award. Will has released four solo LPs including his latest
for Half Note, entitled Native Lands.
Additionally, Calhoun has performed with a diverse
group of artists, including B.B. King, Mick Jagger, Jaco Pastorious,
Harry Belafonte, Pharoah Sanders, Jack Dejohnette, Doug Wimbish,
Paul Simon, Lou Reed, Marcus Miller, Dr.John, Carly Simon, Herb
Alpert, Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood, Wayne Shorter (on
the Grammy-winning CD, High Life), and recorded with rappers
Run-DMC and Public Enemy. As a producer, player, and songwriter,
Will has worked on Herb Alpert's Grammy-nominated CD, Colors,
and Mos Def’s latest LP, New Danger.
Calhoun’s Orion configuration includes 20
x 16 and 18 x 14 bass drums, 14 x 14 and 16 x 16 Floor Toms,
12 x 8 and 10 x 9 Rack Toms and several Black Panther Snare Drums.
Calhoun will also be using 950 Series Mapex Hardware and the
Janus JNSH600 ErgoHat high-hat stand.
